reading DVD drive error

Hi, iv had this PC system for about 2 weeks now and all the sudden the DVD RW drive is not reading anything at all (dvd rw dru-530a, Sony).

It was my first attempt to burn a CD with the new computer but it is not reading anything, CD or DVD, with Data.
I am running my computer on windows xp pro. Prehaps this is a common problem with the drive? Do you know what the soulution of it could be?

I am relatively experienced with computers but this is quite baffaling me.
Thanks

Try updating your firmware from here

Do you have to use firmware created for your particular dvd-rom? Or is it generic? I'm not familiar with this but I have the issue of my computer not reading the dvd's I'm creating on a dvd recorder. I've had the issue of my computer not even recognizing that there is a dvd in the drive and other times getting an error message "The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable." The dvd's are -rw and -r that I've tried to read. My dvd writer uses +r and +rw for writing. It should be able to view any dvd's though, right?

Firmware is drive particular. Best thing to do is go to the website of your drives manufaturer and search for updates for your drive. Firmware may fix your problems.

I searched HP's web site for firmware to no avail. I have an HP pavilion 774e with a 16x dvd-rom. It also has a 200 series dvd-writer.

I've been reading info on firmware and region-locked software... I don't see how this would be causing me problems. I'm not trying to read commercial dvds. I have recorded info on to blank dvds that I'm trying to read. Why would a region be associated with them?

Official firmware that comes from your manufacturer's site usually fix media compatibility problems. While hacked firmware does region-free hacks.

Will I have to go into my computer to find out the "true" manufacturer of my DVD-ROM? The driver is by Microsoft according to properties linked to my DVD-ROM. Thanks.
