What protection does Doom 3 use?

Is it SafeDisk 2?

I want to backup my copy from IGN, but I don't know what Alcohol 120% profile to choose since I don't know what protection Doom 3 uses.

Thanks!

the game is on 3 CDs and i thought i'd make a backup of it on DVD for convenience while installing, it seemed simple enough in theory and i've done it with a few games, like KOTOR, XIII, ETM, etc.

so i copied all the files from each cd to a folder on my hard drive. ran the setup from there and it installed fine. burned the folder to a dvd image and tried again. it asked for disk 2.
tried another image, this time naming the disk DOOM3_2 (the name of disk 2). it worked! but of course... asked for disk 3

obviously theres no way i can name the disk both DOOM3_2 and DOOM3_3, is there any way i can trick it?
also - how come it installs from hard drive, with none of the original cds in, and not dvd? as the folder is just called new folder. so it doesnt care what the hard drive folder is called but cares what the dvd is called.

try making 3 diff folders, each of em with the name of the respective cd.

reddragon105 02-08-2004 10:08

i dont think that would work, as each disk has the folder :\Setup\Data\base

and there are different files in base on each disk, ie. on disk 1 there is pak002.pk4, on disk 2 pak000.pk4 and pak001.pk4 and on disk 3 pak003.pk4 and pak004.pk4.
apart from that, the directory structure and files on the disks are identical on disk 2 and 3, disk 1 has slightly more with having the autorun menu, setup files, directx, docs etc. but still has the same folder

so copying all disks to one folder puts all the pak files in the same place, which makes sense. having a DOOM3_1\Setup\Data\base, DOOM3_2\Setup\Data\base and DOOM3_3\Setup\Data\base on the dvd might confuse it.

and when it asks for the next disk, it simply has 'OK' and 'Cancel' and doesnt give you a chance to manually browse... if it did i'd have no problem :(

i will keep trying, there must be some way. the european version is going to be on dvd, surely it cant be much different to the usa one. there must just be one setting in one file that is telling it to check the name of the disk

UPDATE - i've done a bit of learning about .MSI files this afternoon, the .msi file on doom 3 disk 1 was looking for the next disk at certain points in the installation even if the files it needed were present. it looked for the specific volume labels too.

after finding, downloading and learning how to use an msi editor i managed to change it to look for the same volume label for each disk (the label of the dvd im going to make)

this could be useful info for anyone wanting to back up a multiple disk game to a single dvd

The way to make this, was explained in this thread:

Firstly, thanks for info. :)

Secondly, it can be done even better: ;)
Instead of changing all checked labels, you can just change the "LastSequence" of the first disk to the one of the last one.
http://server6.uploadit.org/files/Kanzler-msi.jpg

Since the first disk label isn't checked, there will be no label check at all anymore. This means, you can call the DVD as you like and install the game from hard disk, network drive etc., too. :)

Brilliant! Thanks for the hints; will be nice to be able to set it installing and walk away when/if it needs to be reinstalled. :)
