Hello All. I've decided I've gone long enough without a PS2 and recently purchased. one. I'd also like to make backups of my games but the procedure is a tad alien to me. (I used to back up my Dreamcast games tho)

First of all. I've shopped a bit for a modchip. I'm looking at a Magic V. Good chip? If so, is it worth the extra 24 bux to get the solderless Modchip clip on www.modchip.us?

I've also heard of Duo Modchips, but can't find any. Help?

I've never soldered anything before. Are the diagrams they offer easy to understand and is it a relatively painless experience?

The guides on the forums seem fond of CloneCD. Cept CloneCD is no longer offered by Elby. Where can I get it, and which version should be used? Or is that just outdated and should I use something else?

What is a good DVD Decrypter for the PS2 Games?

Any Links to copying tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

1) Yes the Magic V is a great mod chip

2) No the solder less clip kit is a rip off and garbage

3) Yes diagrams are easy to follow, painless? No, if you don’t have any soldering experience, consider having a pro do it.

4) CloneCD will only back-up your PS2 titles that are CD based. The app you want to use is RecordNowMax/DX. It will support both DVD and CD based games. The best place with tutorials I believe is http://www.psplace.tk

5) You don’t need a DVD decrypted for PS2 games; it’s not like backing up DVD movies.

6) Take a look at www.foundmy.com if you’re interested in the DUO chip.

alright. thanks a bunch. a couple other questions:

When I buy a modchip, is the chip the only thing i get? it comes with diagram(s), but what about cables or any other necessary tools?

Is the console corner a reliable place to buy a magic V modchip? Previously i looked at modchip.ca and comparing prices, console corner is significantly cheaper. is modchip.ca just high priced?

In the event my anxiety gets the better of me, would it be ok for me to contact you about a professional installation? and if so, what medium do you prefer?

Yes, www.foundmy.com is a great place to purchase mod chips from. I and others on this forum have used them with success. Modchips.ca is VERY expensive.

As for what you get with the chip depends on where you buy it from. If you mean like wire and solder and that, it’s not worth paying a high price for this with the chip when you can get it at Radio Shack for way cheaper, and you will more then likely be having to make a trip to radio shack to get some flux (and probably an iron if you have never soldered) any way as I have never heard of a chip seller putting that in the bag with the chip.

If you’re in Canada you might want to check out gocybershop.ca , They have comparable prices. Sometimes buying from the US to Canada turns out to cost a lot more than you think, if Canada customs nabs you with fees!

thanks for that heads up. however, i am located in the heartland of the US.

What kind of wire will i need to purchase for the chip? I also heard something about needing thicker wires for the reset button and so forth. Any tips?

Will I need solder or flux? or are they the same thing?

The smartest thing you can do is have a pro do the install. No offense, but without any experience soldering you will probably burn up the console. VIA's on v9 and v10's are VERY small.Contact Spedmetal, It will be worth every penny.

its not as much that i want to save money, its that i am a do-it-yourself kind of guy. i used to have people build computers for me until i did it myself. turns out i love it and now make a living doing it. I like the satisfaction that my Ps2 can do something out of the ordinary, and i made it that way.

but id rather not burn my console.....
