plextor px-708uf & alcohol 120
I have a plextor px-708uf and alcohol 120 trial.
Can anyone please advice me whether this combo is capable of backing up my ps2 games. I have tried twice and so far failed, it copied correctly but does not run in my ps2 with a messiah chip in. I have also found out that it does not write efm. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

What do you mean efm? Tyler! |
efm encoding
Thanks for the reply.
All I can tell you is its a burner attribute called efm encoding, I found this out on another site. There is no info available other than the rating of various burners. They use the expression 2 sheep (drive writes regularbit patterns correctly). 1 Sheep (drive writes regular bit patterns almost correctly. 0 sheep (drive does not write regular bit patterns correctly. Hope this helps. |
Ok whatever.
Now can you tell me the version of your ps2? Also which version of Messiah? And finally what games are you trying to burn? Tyler! |
It says SCPH 30003 on the bottom of the ps2, Im unsure about the messiah version all i can tell you is the guy who installed it put a sticker over the screws and wrote m21, is that the version?
If not do i need to open the case? I tried to copy need for speed underground. Thanksfor your help. |
Alcohol and a Plextor drive can, in fact, back up your games.
In fact, the Plextor can WRITE many protections well with Alcohol, regardless of its "sheep score" which is valid only for CloneCD. :) - Gurm |
Hi Gurm,
I am new to dvd and ps2 copying, as i said my recent attempts failed only when the ps2 tried to read. I am using sony dvd-r media is it any good? |
We need to figure out what exact version of ps2 you have. How many screws are on the bottom of your ps2? Open the inside of your expansion bay and tell me if you see only 2 screws in there or 3?

Hi TylerD
There are 6 screws on the bottom of the ps2 and two screw holes inside the expansion bay, hope this helps. I tried to copy medal of honour rising sun last night with DVD Decrypter ver 3.1.9.0 (first time), it told me that it copied ok but it wont play in the playstation. I used Datasafe media 2x. If i open the ps2 will it say on the messiah chip which version it is? |
Im kinda thinkin you have a very old ps2 and an old chip as well. Your ps2 may no longer read ps2 dvd backups.
Do you know how to make dvdr movie backups? If so try one of those in your ps2 and see if it works. This will give us a better idea if your ps2's laser works. Tyler! |
Hi TylerD
The ps2 is 2 years old and was chipped about 14 months ago. I have played several different copied dvd games (by others!!) It will also play copied dvd films as well. Should I open the case to see what messiah it is. Thanks for your help |
Tell you what.
Open it up very carefully. And take a pic of it. Then meet up with me on AIM so I can see the pic (since you cant post large pics here). PM me your AIM username. Tyler! |
TylerD,
What does PM and AIM mean. Im a newbie to posting. Also is there a site that explains how to take apart the ps2, Ive got the bottom off and am unsure what to undo next |
PM = Private Message
AIM = AOL Instant Messenger You can PM me by clicking the little PM button under each of my posts. You have to get AIM from www.aol.com and set up your instant messenger service and then send me the name youve chosen. If this is still too difficult for you to handle then Im sorry but I cant exactly hold your hand through everything. Tyler! |
hehe tyler, man your gettin a bad temper
