question about PSX backup's and CD writers

Hello,

I am trying to create backup copies of a few games I got with my
cd writer.

I have a Smart and Friendly SpeedWriter X4 writer.

I read all the relevant information about copying playstation cd's
and also the tutorials here.

I used clone-cd, cdrwin and Nero, and for the cd's I used TDK
reflex cd's and GPT black pro cd's (with the same black side as in
the original playstation cd's).

I haven't been able to produce one cd that my playstation will
read (I have a 7501 model).

I would like to know if this is becuase of my cd writer (If you can
recomment a good cd writer (Yamaha ??) I would appreciate it
a lot) or is it something else (althoguh I'm pretty sure I did the
right procedure to copy the cd's).

Thank you very much for your help :-)

Bobby

a couple of things I forgot to add

Hi again,

a couple of things I forgot to add

- I have a mod chip installed into my playstation
- all the reading & burning I did were at a speed of X1

Thanks again

do the cd-rs work in another psx?

Black Diamond 31-05-2003 17:27

I believe that drive is the TEAC CD-R55S, you should have no problems burning with it.
CDRWin is the only program to use, CloneCD is not useable with it.
Does your Playstation actually work with copied games?
When using CDRWin use only the default settings, any read errors means the disc is no good to copy.
A list of the games you have tried might be helpfull too.
Do NOT use the black cds, use only dark blue ones.

Strangely, one of the games that I burnt worked on my girlfriend's
brother PSone but on my is started but got stuck (it is called IQ).

Regarding clone-cd - I read that you need a cdr that can read disk
at once (DAO) in raw mode and there are very few writers that can do so - look at :

http://cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdr...hat%20to%20get

I heard about the Plextors, and I also saw that the TEAC CD-R55S
is good in that, but these are older modles and hard to come by.

Regarding cdrwin - I follwed the instructions which appear everywhere on the net to

- check 'copy raw sectors'
- ignore 'error recovery'
- automatic Jitter correction
- automatic subcode analysis
- read retry count is 10
and Data/Audio read/write speed of X1

Do I need to install any ASPI drivers for cdrwin to work in Win2K ?

I have one copied game and the playstation works with it - does
the mod chip is also related to the ability of the playstation to
play backup cd's (I mean - are there mod chips that can handle
the backup cd's better then others ?)

I tried to copy NFS Porche 2000 NFS Hot pursuit and Spyro 3.

On NFS Porche 2000 I can see that there is one data track and the rest are audio tracks (as clonecd says), after creating an image I chancked it, and it has exactly the same tracks as on the
original cd, but after burning it, I got that the cd is audio cd
(even the first track that should have been data is audio).

Can you please give me company names and type names of the
dark blue cd's

Again, I appreciate your great help.

Thanks guys

Also, what do you think of Yamaha cd writers - has anyone had
good experience with a Yamaha writer and some kind of software
in creating working backup's of psx cd's ?

Thanks :-)

one more thing...

Sorry, other questions keep poping from my head after I wrote
a few of them, please forgive me if I have taken 80 % of this thread but I am new to this and I want to learn a little with your
great help.

I forgot to mention 2 things - I started to download psx game images from the playstation image newsgroup - I want to ask
if I only need to write the image (which was prepared by someone else, maybe with a good cd writer and with better
experience), can I do it safely with my Smart and Friendly cd
writer ? or do I need those best writer (as I mentioned in the
above questions) ?

Also, I downloaded a couple of games before I got my psx, and I
burnt them X4 to some cheap cdr's - none of them are read by
all the psx's that I tried, would I be able to read these
cd's back to images and write them to better quality cd's (or again
do I need the DAO raw cd writers to do that?)

Again, guys/and girls thank for all your great help :-)

snake2 31-05-2003 18:44

i think your not suposed to ask about downloaded games here.

Black Diamond 31-05-2003 18:54

I have burnt hundreds of PSX games with my TEAC 55S.
Error recovery should always be set to abort.
Any errors mean the cd is not worth copying.
You will NOT copy Spyro 3 unless you have something like a Liteon burner, it is protected and NO patches work for it.
To see if games are protected or not visit http://www.geocities.com/psxcplist/ (if it still exists) or check at http://www.megagames.com/console/psx_patches.htm to see if any patches exist for the game.
If your Playstation is not a 9001 then it is possible the laser assy is worn causing it not to play copies.

bobbye 31-05-2003 19:01

the megagames site is a great site, I got most of the info from it.
wah tcan I do with a lasy laser )my psx is not 9001 its 7501)
?

Black Diamond 31-05-2003 19:17

You could probably purchase a good second hand 9001 for the same cost as a new laser assy for the 7501.
I think you can find laser assy repair details on http://www.ozchips.com.au/lazerrepair.html if you wish to try your luck doing that.

bobbye 31-05-2003 19:22

I already bought this 7501 which as I know wasn't used much.

So what do you think about images - will I be able to burn them
and use the cd's or do I need a better writer ?

Is it worthwhile creating images from the cd's I burnt with X4 and
try to burn them again to better cd's ?

If I have an image and I burnt it to a cd - does the copy protection
stays ?

Thanks !!! :-)

Black Diamond 31-05-2003 19:25

You cannot make working copies from non working ones.
Protection can only be copied using CloneCD with a 100% compatible burner.
If the protection is anti mod chip then a patch must be apllied (if one exists) and the cd image created and burnt using CDRWin. (The Goldenhawk one)

bobbye 31-05-2003 19:29

what a shame, I have a few good games, well nothing lasts
forever.

but what about new images I get, will I need a good cd writer
to burn ready made images or can I use my own SAF writer ?

Thanks :-)

Black Diamond 31-05-2003 19:33

I have burnt hundreds of PSX games with my TEAC 55S.
It might also be an idea to scan your created images using Binchunker or CDMage for corruption before burning.
If corruption is present there is no point in burning as the copy will probably not work correctly.
