Help choose me a DVD drive
 

I am thinking of getting a DVD writer but dont know a lot about them. I have tried reading as much as I can on the web, but am still confused. I want a writer to back up my PS2 games, dvd films and general back up of my system. I have seen the NEC ND1000A DVD+R Writer going for £120 and the PIONEER 105 DVD-RW X 4 Speed Writer ( OEM ) going for £210. Apart from the price what is the biggest difference between the - and + formats? Which would suit my needs better? Thanks for any help you can give a DVD noobie.:)

Thanks Bighap. So I am now down to deciding between a Pioneer DVD recorder IDE DVR-A05 or the TOSHIBA SD-R5002 DVD-R/RW Writer. Will I need a DVD Rom to copy my DVD's ect.. to my hard drive or will a recorder do okay? What about multi region DVD's and protected DVD's? Is there anything else I should be taking into consideration before buying?

I would go with the Pioneer, because customers like myself always walk away happy. You don't need a dvd rom, but it would help. This will greatly increase your reading time over using the burner to read, and would also cause less stress on your burner by saving the rip task for the dvd rom. There is region free firmware available for Pioneer drives, so multi region dvds aren't a problem. Depending on how you are going to burn your dvd, there are several very easy ways to remove dvd protection, so no worries here. Hope this helps.

Wow! thanks for the fast reply bighap. I know the biggest factor is the cost of the media, 2x speed is fairly cheap. Is there really a big difference between the Toshiba and the Pioneer when it comes to compatability with software and backing up PS2? Can the Toshiba be flashed to multi-region? The reason I ask is the Toshiba is £159.00 and the Pioneer is £210, I will have to wait for stock for the Pioneer (some sort of shortage in the uk?), and the Toshiba is available now. If there is a really big difference between them I will wait. Sorry to drag the thread on a bit, I am just trying to justify the extra expence for the Pioneer. One other question, do you know if the front bezel of the drives comes of easily? Only I plan on spraying my new drive to match my Lian LI PC65.:eek:

Not sure what Toshiba drive you are talking about, but both the SD-R5002 and SD-R6012 have region free patches. The Toshiba will be fine compatibility wise and backing up ps2 games. Can't blame ya for wanting to save some money and being able to get a Toshiba now. The Pioneer is sold out, despite costing more, because people know it is a proven winner and is a big seller as a result. Not sure about the front bezel for either the Pioneer or Toshiba. It is your decision.

The Toshiba is the SD-R5002, Judging by your post count and the number of helpful replies I have seen you post, I’ll take the benefit of your experience and go for the Pioneer..........I just hope I don’t have long to wait.:D
