DVD backup movies wont play Magic 3
PS2 V5/6 fitted with Magic 3. PS2 will play all original games and DVD movies. Will play all my backed-up PS1 and PS2 games but will NOT play any backed up movies.
***NOTE*** DVD-R movie back-ups would not play on the PS2 before the mod chip was fitted. Console SCPH3003R Browser 1.20 CD Player 1.20 Playstation Driver 1.10 DVD Player 2.10E The DVD-R blanks that I use are either cheapo generation 3 or Datasafe White generation 3 (Ritek dye same as Traxdata). All the DVD game back-up's play fine but I just can't get a movie back-up to play. I have ripped with Smartripper, stripped to the movie only with IFOEdit removing region and macrovision and burnt with Nero V5.5.7.2 OEM. I have even used Prassi V2 using the global image method with a small DVD and kept everything and that would not play either. All the copy's play on stand alone DVD players with no problem but the PS2 will not play them. I have tried all the boot methods.... Put the DVD-R in the tray and close it, Power down, Power on then press the reset button until the blue LED comes on then release.... result is either a request to insert a PS2 disc or a black screen. I cant afford to let the kids use the originals as they will not put them back into their cases after use they like most kids just leve them laying around to get scratche up. What is the problem do I have a faulty Magic 3 or have I got a wire with a dry joint. I presume the DVD-R's are ok as all the games play so the laser can read them. The DVD movies are PAL region 2. |
when i started burning movies i burned with nero 5.5.64 they played fine standalone would not boot ps2 v4 or v5 (no idea about v7 not available then
same films burnt with prassi played in everything no idea if nero sorted this problem yet i use prassi but its possible the magic3 has nothing to do with it |
Is it correct to assume that because the PS2 will play the DVD-R's if they are game discs then they should work for movies.

I noticed that when I make my own dvd movies, for them to play in PS2 I "Interlace" when encoding my own movies or when making folders, make sure your folders look like this: VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS with all caps.

When I used Prassi V2 using the global image method with a small DVD and kept everything (including VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS with all caps) and that would not play either, but it plays fine on stand alone DVD players and on PC's but no go on the PS2.

I use make a DATA disc and just put the folders in that. Then just burned. I have no problems doing it that way.
And yes if your games work then your Movies should work. Im kind of wondering if maybe your making the images wrong. Also go into more detail with what happens when you put in your disc. Does it even recognize it as a dvd movie? Does your PC dvd player recognize it as a dvd movie? Tyler! |
The DVD-R movies play fine on a PC and stand alone DVD players.
When the PS2 boots you can hear the drive speed up a few times then one of two things happens.... Either you will get a message asking you to put a PS2 disc into the machine or you just get a black screen with no messages. |
Hmm, sorry man Im stumped. That is how I get my dvd movies to work. I dont know if the chip has anything to do with it but I really dont think it should. Unless your in some other mode while trying to load the movie.
Maybe someone else with a similar setup can help. Tyler! |
Is it just me or does it seem like lots of people are having problems with their magic 3s?
|
Its NOT just you. :(

That's what I thought. That's why you spend the extra $20 and get a messiah 2.;)

Is there an official site for Magic 3 so I could ask them...
I ordered a Messiah 2 but my supplyer could not get them after 3 weeks so sent a Magic 3 and they cant answer any technical questions as its the first batch that they have had. They will swap it at no cost. |
Are you sure you have the movies in the correct format? When you ripped it you may have put it into VCD or SVCD format and mistakenly made a (S)VCD-DVD. They do play in many standalone players. You might want to try to re-encode your video with some program like TMPGEnc.

Movies are in the correct format, one is a direct ghost type image made with Prassi V2 using the global image backup method on a generation 3 Ritek dye same as Traxdata DVD-R disc which plays fine on PC's and stand alone players but not on the PS2.

All sorted 100% now it was a combination of two things.
1. Bad media, I had bought a 100 tube of media and a LOT of it was bad, onr disc even had data on it. Since I changed media I have not had one failure (since I discovered my mistake in burning see No.2. The supplyer changed the media with no questions and even credited me for all the coasters. 2. I use smartripper to copy the DVD to the PC's HDD then IfoEdit to strip it to movie only. Where I went wrong was that I was not dooing a "Get VTS Sectors" before burning, since I have been dooing that I have not had a single failure. |
