V5 or newer should play them
v4 or older doesnt normally

Is that safe?

V4 or V5 I take it these are the versions of the console...if so how can you tell? And do you need a special mod chip for this.
Thanks

Yeah... V4 & V5 are version numbers.... Look on the back of your PS2... There is a number that starts with SCPH-xxxxxx.... We need that number and if their is a R at the end let us know that also....
No special mod chip needed to play the +R/+RW format. The laser will decide for you if it will play it or not... Thats the reason the older ones have a harder time playing them..... The newer versions have better lasers and have a much greater success at reading the +R/+RW format...

I have a V4 SCPH-300004 PS2. I have burn yesterday a DVD to a DVD+R from TDK. The PS2 play the DVD-Clone without problems. Goes then also Game-clones on DVD+Rs? I have a Messiah MOD-Chip V3-V6 (Final-Edition!).

Never use Verbatim DVD+R it doesnt work whatsoever,
DVD+RW doesnt work either, so keep in your mind, only some of DVD+R works....

I've got PS2 version 7, using blue chip, apple chip also no problem, using blue chip is a bit problem when booting some of DVD+R, but apple chip almost boot everytime and every DVD+R

I've backed up most of my games on to DVD+R/RW and both have worked and have not noticed a difference between the two. I haven't had any problems with this media. I'm using HP discs (only ones I can find here).

I have a Ver 7 pS2 and the Messiah2 and using Record Now Max to burn.
