Resident Evil 2 backup problems

Hello, I am new to the scene and have recently installed an R-Mod into my US v5 PS2, the older version of this mod that makes the cd tray fly in and out really fast. This mod in general stinks as far as I'm concerned but it does work, what the hey:)

I am having trouble backing up my copy of Resident Evil 2 for Playstation.

I use a Dell 1.1ghz intel celeron that comes with a standard cdrw.
The drive is capable of writing in raw mode and does a very nice job. I have backed-up several other games, which are also playstation, and they work fine with the r-mod I have. Every game I have backed up so far is working with only 1 try, except Resident Evil 2. I have made 4 copies and none of them work.

I read and write at 1x speed for every game. I have tried RESEVIL 2 with cdrwin and clonecd and both of these progs have turned out good copies for me before.

I am using Verbatim Datalife plus cd media to make my backups on. This game is fairly old and I am at a loss as to why it will not play in my modded ps2.

Is there a special patch that is needed for this release?
What gives.........

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
