Weird! Nero made a MEGA-overburn on 700mb disc without being set to overburn!
 

Rarely do I post these types of messages in here - I'm usually pretty reserved, but I had something happen the other day when I burned a couple of large MPEG 2 files to SVCD discs.

The files were extremely large but I figured, what the heck, I'll give 'em a try. I popped in a 700mb disc (CompUSA brand), and made sure OVERBURN options were turned OFF. I figured Nero would pop an error in the TEST phase if it couldn't do it. I didn't get an error, so I went on with the burn.

I succeeded in burning an SVCD with 796mb and another with about 780mb of data, to standard CompUSA discs, using Nero, without telling it that Overburning was OK.

My CDRW drive must have some awesome abilities if it can overburn almost 100MB over the capacity of a 700mb disc.

What does everyone think? Is this unusual or does Nero overburn automatically unless you give it a limit for the overburning?

no, this is normal, if you burn an svcd, it is the same as an audiocd, the cd-r could hold much more data as burning an iso9660 disc.

So even though my 700mb discs have mpg files consisting of 793 and 778mb, this is not an overburn situation? Any software that does SVCD would have successfully placed a 793mb mpeg2 file on a SVCD burned to a 700mb disc?

If so, there must be some sort of native compression going on, because I have actually copied the 793mb file back to my hard drive and it's still a functional .MPG file of 793meg - and it was written to a 700mb (max) CD-R disc. I just haven't figured out how it's possible without overburning, just yet.

(Of course, I don't know of another burner software that supports SVCD offhand - since Easy CD Creator doesn't and I don't think NTI does either.)

Scorpion is right - when burning ISO9660 you get more space.
And other formats too.

What's really strange is that Nero wouldn't allow me to add the 793mb file to a CDROM image (it couldn't burn it to a 700mb disc), but when it was added to an SVCD image, it would burn without a problem, and the file could be copied right back to the hard drive after the fact.

It did copy back to the hard drive rather slowly, so maybe it was almost like "RIPPING" an audio track when I copied it to the hard drive.

It is very creepy, Wayne... But that iso format is a really tight compression.. which I am guessing it is fooling the OS... I mean.. You CAN overburn.. but you can't burn on the clear plastic right? lol

the thing is, when you burn an normal iso9660 cd the data becomes a lot of error correction and so on, what takes a lot of data. by an svcd it is so as by an audio cd. not so much error correction bytes and so on ( i know not all of what in iso for extra bytes exists) and you could burn more then 650 or 700 mb whithout overburn!
try to rip an music cd whitch is full of 80 minutes and see the waves, much more then 700 mb but 80 minutes.
