GD-ROM No Longer Spins Up

Being the tinkerer I am, I cracked open my DC, not the first time I had done it. Well I didn't see any dust, so I decided to dig a little deeper. I unscrewed the GD-ROM lens housing. Still no dust or anything that would cause the games to lock up, as lots of us had experienced. So I started to re-assemble and give up. I put it all back together, hooked everything together, put the CD in and powered up. I noticed it was mighty quiet, and the screen was black, soon the Dreamcast logo (unanimated for once) came on screen and just sat there. I powered off, opened the lid and powered back on, the CD did not move at all.

I may have missed the connector for the GD-ROM lens housing on the mainboard, I don't know. The way both are positioned in accordance with each other is a pain in the ass to correctly mount it.

You know.. this gives me an idea.. I think I will turn an old PC case into my new DC housing..

I dunno, anyone have any thoughts on why the GD-ROM no longer spins up?

If the clock dont tick, its broken.

If the car dont start, its broken.

And if your dc dont spin...

Ummm... Im kinda guessing you broke it.

Cars are hard to fix yourself, clocks are impossible, as for dreamcasts, well you should find some kind of electronic repair shop or store or someplace where the ppl know what to do about this kind of thing. I'm no expert but I'm kinda guessing that they'll charge you a shitload in repair costs, so your best bet is to just buy a new dc, preferably one made before oct2000. Doing that will most likely solve all your current problems. 8-)

Not the mechanic either... I took apart one DC before, and had a similar problem...

The dang thing just didnt spin. In the midst of the guts are the plastic gears that actually SPING the GDROM.

Check to make sure the gears are touching, and you can even manually move the gears to see if it moves.

If it moves when you spin the gears, you have a motor problem, and you will need to replace the motor. Chances are, that one of the gears ain't catchin'

Gee! I have disassembled my DC down to circuit boards and an empty case twice already, once exploratory and the second to tweak the heat-sinks for more firm contact on the CPU and VID chips. Neither time did it have a problem after reassembly!

Of course, I didn't disassemble the GD-ROM unit though, but I did remove it from the system twice.
