Firmware on Classic XP3
I have a Classic XP3 playerwith a 10GB hard drive. The thing keeps locking up, however. I'm able to put songs on it, but I can't listen to them. It shows a screen that says "MP3/WMA JUKEBOX". On the EMI Global website (here, in fact) it says,
(Quote) If the player is showing MP3/WMA and is non responsive, then the firmware in the unit has been damaged and needs to be reformatted. If the CHD500's firmware was updated to the latest version you can format the unit using any versions of windows. If the unit has a older firmware, then the unit must be formatted by a Windows 98Se or Windows Me Pc. Once formatted please upgrade to the latest firmware and reload your music. (unquote) However, it doesn't say how to install the new "firmware". I don't want to format my toy (which cost me $90) until I'm absolutely certain that I'mm be able to get an OS onto it and have it work. Does anyone know how to install the firmware? If not, can you tell me where to find out how? best of regards the_cloaked_crusader |

Thanks! But Now I'm trying to download the Version 5 Update, and it stops at 8%. We're on Earthlink, so it should not take several hours to get to 10%, am I right?

Got a link?
|
Right here.
http://www.emiglobal.com/faq/chd500.html It's the first option from the top . . . Is that even what I need, or is it just an addendum to the current firmware? I appreciate your help. :) |
It is not just you. Their website sucks. I couldn't get the file either. I would send them an email letting them know the problem you are having and that their are issues with the firmware file on their website.
|
OK, I sent them an email. How much do you want to bet that it's not fixed by this Friday?
I'm afraid they won't even service me since I bought hte machine on e-bay . . . |
That is pretty bad customer support if you don't hear from them by then. I tried looking for other websites with the fie but with no luck. :(
|
Problem is, they might not look on me as a customer since I didn't buy the product directly from them. :( but hey, maybe they'll act like scupulous human beings . . .
I appreciate the time you put into helping me. I'm going to keep looking aorund and I'll update you if I find anything. :) |
No prob
Well proof of purchase isn't asked for, so I think you will be ok in that regard. Wether they have any decent customer service in general is another thing.
|
Have either of you guys tried using Flashget to download the file? Sometimes when I have this sort of problem I use Flashget and it works hella better. It also allows you to resume.
Tyler! |
No, I haven't tried it. Do you have a link where it's available?
|
Trying it now.
|
Let me know. :)
|
I think this might work. If it does I'll email the file to your registered email address.
|
File sent. Hopefully this will solve your prob.
Thanks for the suggestion Tyler. It only took a million retrys. :p |
How do I open it? Is it unzipped? I assume so since it's not in a *.zip format . . . but windows doesn't know what to do with it and I am helples to help it.
|
This is for a different model, but it should be very similar.

OK, I'm down with Steps 1 and 2. Step 3 brings out the first minor problem: my model doesn't make the USB connection automatically, it has to be turned on. I don't know if this will be troublesome or not. Step 4 is unnecessary since my player is currently empty of songs. Step 5 doesn't work out: when I click the file on the desktop, I get no onscreen prompts: windows simply tells me that it doesn't know what to dow ith this file. do you have any inkling of what program I should use? the net service was of no use whatever . . .
You deserve some sort of "helpful person" award . . . ;) |

Ok I found some directions for some older firmware updates. They might be the same directions for the new firmware. Here is a copy and paste:
Classic CHD500 Firmware 1.003 __________________________________________________ ______________________ Changes: This release hasthe following changes (compared to 1.002): 1) Fix for disk formatting problems under Windows 2000 and XP 2) Fix for handling MP3 ID3v2 tags __________________________________________________ ______________________ Notes: Users upgrading from revision 1.002 firmware will not have to backup and reload their music collection. Users upgrading from revision 0.012 will have to backup and copy their music back onto the CHD500 after the upgrade as the disk will be reformatted by the upgrade procedure. __________________________________________________ _______________________ Installing: When upgrading from firmware version 0.012: 1) Switch on the CHD500 2) Copy the attached file "CHD500FW.157" to a PC that has USB. 3) Connect the CHD500 to the PC using the USB cable, the CHD500 should show "USB" on the LCD. 4) in Windows, you should see a new removable drive appear, this is the CHD500. 5) Copy all .MP3/.WMA files from the CHD500 to the PC if you wish to keep them. 6) Copy "CHD500FW.157" to the root directory (top level) on the CHD500 (copy and paste or drag and drop). 7) Remove the USB cable from the CHD500, the unit will reboot and the main menu will appear on the LCD. 8) Power off the CHD500 and switch on again. This will cause the firmware to be upgraded AND THE DISK REFORMATTED! 9) Check that the revision in the Settings|About menu is now 1.002. If so then the process has been successful 10) Connect the CHD500 to the PC using the USB cable again. 11) Copy the .MP3/.WMA files previously copied in step 5 above back to the CHD500. When upgrdaing from Firmware Version 1.002: 1) Switch on the CHD500 2) Copy the attached file "CHD500FW.157" to a PC that has USB. 3) Connect the CHD500 to the PC using the USB cable, the CHD500 should show "USB" on the LCD. 4) in Windows, you should see a new removable drive appear, this is the CHD500. 5) Copy "CHD500FW.157" to the root directory (top level) on the CHD500 (copy and paste or drag and drop). 6) Remove the USB cable from the CHD500, the unit will reboot and the main menu will appear on the LCD. 7) Power off the CHD500 and switch on again. This will cause the firmware to be upgraded. 8) Check that the revision in the Settings|About menu is now 1.003. If so then the process has been successful 9) Connect the CHD500 to the PC using the USB cable again. |
I got a response from EMI. They told me what to do and I got the firmware installed, but the device still doesn't work. It says the hard disk should be reformatted automatically? It didn't do that for me. I can't even turn the crumpy thing off. I have to remove the battery pack to get it to turn off. The only time it shows anything besides "MP3/WMA JUKEBOX" is when the USB is connected. :( The firmware does show up on the top layer of the "CHD500" drive in My Computer, however, which suggests that it wasn't taken. the other firmware was invisible to the computer. Will this information be of any service?

I have heard a lot of people having issues with this thing. Many get a replacement if it too screwed up. Tell them your issue and see if you can fix, and if not get a replacement.

If it has been 3 years then you are SOL cause I doubt it has that long of a warranty.
