bigger hdd...?

my bro wanted me to install him a bigger hdd (bigger than 132)
there isnt anything different than like installing a standard one, right?

Quall999 21-02-2004 18:04

nope, but if it is bigger than like 200gb (maybe 250, not sure), then you have to have the G partition. You know the dofferent bios, right?

AXmichigan 21-02-2004 18:09

yea i noe all that
till what size does it needa be if u want it locked?
like.. im not sure who it is
but they couldnt lock their hdd cuz it was a certain size

Quall999 21-02-2004 18:14

Size doesn't matter. Some hard-drives can't be locked, so beware of this when you buy one. I saw a list of lockable hdd's somewhere, just can't remember where.

AXmichigan 21-02-2004 18:16

oo k
theres no limit in size either.. right??

AXmichigan 21-02-2004 21:04

also..
how would i go about formatting the drives?
i use the old school way just cuz thats what i trust..
its where evox formats c,e,f,x,y,z
if i add g in the command would it be fine?
do i have to update evox?

almost, a partition can only have somewhere arounf 200-250gb. Not sure the exact number, but you probably can't get more than 500gb.

AXmichigan 22-02-2004 09:58

o cool..
so woudl the oldschool way work.. where i coopy the c and e drive via ftp with the new hdd using an evox boot cd? (adding the letter g to be formatted)... or do i needa use one of those slayer dealys that newer people use?

V_LESTAT 22-02-2004 12:16

uhm anything above 130 gig or was it 145? needs the newest bios and evox it MUST support the G drive.

and formatting is as simple as using the evox format function.

but you also need a chip that supports having a blank hard disk in it,, then you can use something like slayers to install and partition the hard drive.
you can open the slayers installer and replace the evox and stuff with the latest version same with the other apps, then remake the iso with craxion and burn with record now or nero.

or if you had made a backup of your original partitions using fatXplorer or somthing then you can install the drive,, do the hex edit on it,, then load the back up iso onto the drive and it will format it into a working drive,
you will also need to make a back up of the eeprom and lock the drive,, or again have a chip that supports unlocked drives,, then you can use evox to lock the drive.

AXmichigan 22-02-2004 13:38

yea that slayers thing
i have one of em
i have no clue how to use em
cuz ive been usin the old school way.. just cuz im and ol' schooler with xboxs..
and my question also was.. i remember quall saying somethin about the hdds not usin the full 7200 rpm.. but instead only uses the 5400rpm?.. how do u noe?

V_LESTAT 22-02-2004 13:48

thats not true,, the hard drive can not be told to run at a slower rpm,, thats like buying gas for your car that turns it from a 6 cylinder into a 4 cylinder,, its not possible,.

man what kinda people you got lurking here.

the only thing that is changed about your hard drives is if its an ultra 100 drive,, if you had an 80 pin cable,, usually the light blueish grey ide cables,, it really dont add the speed. like it would on a PC. and if you stay with the standard ide xbox cable which is an U66 cable the drive IF its an U100 drive will only run at U66 which is just fine,

dont worry use a 7200 rpm drive,, the hard drive will give the xbox the data it needs.

and i have a 5400 and a 7200 drive(s) one in each of my box's and there IS a difference in loading times. of course the 7200 ius faster.

and what do you mean by "the old way" i have no clue what your talking about,

and to be VERY honest with you bro,, go over to xbox-scene and do your xbox stuff that is T H E best place for xbox info, there is no other forum out there that can compare with the wealth of knowledge over there.
and besides most of the main programmers for stuff like unleash x slayers installer, craxion, Qwix, MXM,, and many other apps are regular people there,, so you can have the creators right there at your fingertips to ask.

anyways

u should noe who quall, me, jivey, rms, dude and some other fellas in this forum, are
the older way is the ftp after formatting the drive via and evox boot cd
of course i know about xbox-scene... shooot, i even donated a couple tutorials to them 8)

I have a 160gb hdd, like 150 or so is all on F.

The 06 is for all on F, 67 is for 137 on F and G for the rest. Like I said before, each partition does can have a max of 200 (maybe 250) or so. So go with the 67 bios for larger drives than 200gb. I just backuped my Cand E drive. Used evox ftp commands to format, then sent em back. Ther was a tutorial somewhere around here...

V_LESTAT 23-02-2004 03:32

the fact still remains,,, if you put in a 7200 rom it DOES NOT become reduced to a 5400 rpm drive,,
all it does it go from an U100 drive to an U66 drive.

and not to take anything away from you fellas i simply offered him a forum that might offer him more help.

V_LESTAT 23-02-2004 03:34

well im not saying you have to have everyting on G lol im just saying the guy said anything over 200 gigs or whatever it was and its not its anything over 130 or 145 (i forget)gigs if memory serves me correctly.

Quall999 23-02-2004 03:50

my total was to 152gb. I know your right in that there is a limit on F, probably 145 rounded.

AXmichigan 23-02-2004 19:59

yea quall
the evox ftp commands that u use to format em, thats what i was wonderin about
i just gotta slayer from xbins though
im gonna try it out i suppose.. once i figure out how to work this baby

AXmichigan 23-02-2004 22:19

one of my friends told me this:
"Anyways, if your HDD is less than 256 GB (basically any HDD up to 250 GB), then u can just flash with a .06 bios and have one large F drive for simplicity. If u want to, u can have an F and a G drive with the .67 bios. If you're installing anything bigger than 256 GB (basically the 300 GB HDD's), then you're gonna have to use the .67 bios otherwise data corrutption will occur."
is that true?

V_LESTAT 24-02-2004 13:26

it really dont matter bro you can use .06 OR .67 for a small or large hard drive,, all the .67 does is ALLOW you to make a G drive if you want to.
i flashed mine with 4980.67 and G is available if i want it and all i have is a 120 gig.

"LBA48 support" means support for hard drives larger than 137GB

LBA48 is for a G drive soooooo

ANYTHING over 137 gigs you MUST use the .67 bios and enable the G drive otherwise your xbox wont show ALL of the gigabytes you have it will only show 137 gigs.

if you use the .67 bios G is enabled automatically, but check and make sure you have the latest evox becuase you can turn OFF the G drive in the evox settings menu.
as long as its enabled,, just choose format G or F or BOTH if your installing a new hard drive.

AXmichigan 24-02-2004 14:42

but then y does that other guy say that it can be used with 256 gigs?

o and yes, i did it before you said so, v
8)

V_LESTAT 24-02-2004 14:56

well you go ahead and do whatever you want

AXmichigan 24-02-2004 15:04

for like barely a beginner
u have way more attitude than u should
sometimes i think i oughta do somethin bout that

V_LESTAT 24-02-2004 15:16

barely a beginner,, yeah uh huh sure thing dude
you have no clue who i am.
ill admit to the ps2 newbie. but everything else,, yeah ok sure thing.

now go ahead and do something,,

TylerDurden 24-02-2004 15:55

Now now boys, Im the one with the attitude around here.

Tyler!

Quall999 24-02-2004 18:58

06 bios have the LBA48 hack too . At least in 4979, 80, and 81 x-ecuter bios. And my F is 152gb....

AXmichigan, flash with the 06 bios. If it doesn't work, just reflash before you send things on F. And don't use boXplorer, it only recognizes so much memory on the HDD. Use media-x-menu, it should give the right amount of space available.

AXmichigan 24-02-2004 20:05

ok thanks quall
ill do that

as for you v,
somethin ur doin is just tickin me off a lil, just dont pressure me and well be cool

AXmichigan 28-02-2004 03:40

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.p...&#entry1204167

so a 250 gig can work fine with the f drive alone, g not needed

V_LESTAT 28-02-2004 04:37

"somethin ur doin is just tickin me off a lil, just dont pressure me and well be cool"

your idle threats of well whatever it is you "think" you can do to me are under no circumstnaces a threat,, dont think for one minute that i base my life or ANYTHING on this or any other forum. its childish for you to think so and more childish for you to sit here and try to accuse me of how did you put it,, "Somethin"
you people think that just because someone is new to THIS forum or another that they are new to everything. and that is where YOU are wrong.

your not even a mod unless ive missed something.

ive not spoken one ounce of lies nor spewed babble, if i speak of misinformation then ill apologise IF i am shown my error and corrected,, i always have gladly stood down and said yes im wrong. or at least hid in a corner.

anyways,, threaten me again go ahead.

(i feel like those old Robert Conrad Battery commercials when he has the battery on his shoulder and says "Go ahead, I dare ya")

AXmichigan 28-02-2004 14:02

calm down their chief
