You can compress it more by separating WWise sound files..
For all *.ba2 files - xtool:mstarfield+xtool:mreflate+srep+lolz
For all *.bk2 files - xtool:c256mb:mbk2:df20p
For all WWise - srep+ lzma (bcm/msc + srep +lzma)
For everything else - srep+lolz

What about size? It can be under 70gb? Using lolz IMO not worth it

KaktoR 05-09-2023 06:17

Actually, using dd without any number, is xtool internal deduplication without srep, which might lead to bigger output sizes.

Example for "Starfield - Textures01.ba2": First is xtool internal deduplication (dd), second is with srep (dd#)
Code:

Streams: 15714 / 15714
Time: 00:00:52 (CPU 00:04:52)
Duplicates: 4795 (170 MB) [1.09 GB >> 1.37 GB]

Size: 4.00 GB >> 5.06 GB >> 3.69 GB

Additional decoding memory is 133 MB
Decoding speed improved by up to 1.38x

Done!!!

Compression under Process with the DSG. Will share every detail with extraction time and all. However, I checked those WWise and compressed them separately using xtool:mstarfield+xtool:reflate+srep+lolz.

19.3GB >> 6.98GB
With approx. 2 minutes of decompression time on my installer on high end PC on SSD.

KaktoR 05-09-2023 09:03

lolz on sound files? Really?

If you have some spare time, try lzma, lzma2, zstd, bcm, razor instead. From my last tests, zstd had some good results (default settings).

Fak Eid 05-09-2023 10:38

3 Attachment(s)
I tried lzma, got around 10GB
bcm was around 7.7GB (not exact size but something around this)
haven't tried rzr/zstd, but once I'll do a final compression, I'll share all the logs with their extraction time.
if you want I can share you the file and my setup.exe.

Edit 1: RZR 10GB
Edit 2: zstd (max) 9.57GB

I was lately aware that xtool:dd3 was faster than srep. You can experiment that jut in case.
Total unpacking Time: 15-18 minutes
SSD to HDD [High End PC]

Edit 1: srep_new:3 vs xtool:dd3 have absolutely no size difference on file size. I ran few tests on big files.
There was not much difference in extraction speed/time between both the methods too.

Edit 2: If you want better compression size on Data-01 (don't try on Data-02), you can try precomp at cost of extraction speed
[Thanks to sc00t3r for this]

Sorry for stupid question, but how we know ba2 files contain WWise files because i can't find them? And thank you for testing maybe some day when the game get final update i will recompress it again.

KaktoR 06-09-2023 06:32

Either you can see it by just looking at the file names (example: "Starfield - WwiseSounds01.ba2"), or by using HxD and search for wem specific texts, like this
https://i.imgur.com/4Au5CBE.png

And now, how about to know if you can compress them with msc/xtool:mflac..
Just test it lol

In this case for Starfield, you cannot use msc or xtool:mflac, because the wem files are encoded with ogg vorbis.

I see, but what i write in DSG_Settings for .ba2 wwise files to compress seperately? Thank you:)

Fak Eid 06-09-2023 07:29

I don't know how you can skip. Not completely aware about DSG coding, but this is how I did.

I moved all the WWise files out in a separate folder.
Like Starfiled > Data > *.ba2 (except WWise)
and New Folder > Data > WWise * .ba2 files

And then, compressed Starfield and New Folder separately.
If you have trouble, you can DM me privately on topic

Thanks bro for reply & sorry for stupid question:D

Fak Eid 08-09-2023 04:59

@Kaktor

I tried xtool's dd3 vs srep_new:3 on few starfield files to test. I couldn't notice size difference, nor much difference in extraction time.

KaktoR 08-09-2023 07:20

It is much faster in encoding because all goes directly through stdin. And even on decoding it is slightly faster, also it requires less memory.

Normally, if you use srep it will copy all the files to a temp folder first which can take a lot of time, plus it requires additional disk space, and also doing its "second pass". With xtool dd, all these steps are obsolete. The output data which comes from srep is compressed immediately if you use compressors which works in stdin/stdout or cls mode (which lolz does not do atm in dsg). For example lzma, lzma2, fast-lzma2 and zstd.

However, a Idea comes to my mind and I will ask César if he can add something to dsg.

I got a error too. Use low memory parameter for xtool (:lm). This will fix the issue.

Code:

Oh and make sure you have enough free hard disk space free lol. Seems like you need a few hundreds of gb's of free space.

Send me the summary (click summary button). Otherwise I cannot see what's the problem actually.

Edit: I see, my bad sorry. Change the lines in DSG_Settings.ini

Thanks for the correction. That problem solved and compression finished.

Seems like you have problems with masked compression lately.

Recompress just the last bin file.

1. Move all files out of conversion folder to somewhere else (somewhere out of diskspan_gui folder).
2. Edit DSG_Settings.ini like this
Code:

[Game1Settings]
Name=Starfield
Exec=
EGPath=C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Starfield
MethodState=1
Data1.Name=Data1e-01.bin
Data1.Method1=xtool:dd3+LOLZ_NORMAL|0
Data1.ExclText=*.ba2|*.bk2|*.esm

3. Open DSG and point to game folder and compress
4. If compression is done, open records.ini and copy the "Size=" key and paste it in old records.ini (from the compression before which gave you an error)
5. Move Data1e-01.bin to the folder which contains the compressed files from before

This should do it.

Should I edit the Data1 or Data5?

KaktoR 13-09-2023 10:45

Just follow the steps described above. At the end, replace new created Data1e-01.bin with the old one. Just move the old files to somewhere else.
