A proposed amendment to the current copy protection license governing DVDs would completely ban all DVD backups, and prevent DVD playback without the DVD disk being present inside the drive. The proposed amendment was made public in a letter sent by Michael Malcolm, the chief executive of Kaleidescape, a DVD jukebox company whichsuccessfully defeated a suit by the DVD Copy Control Association (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2106317,00.asp) (DVD CCA) this past March. The proposed amendment is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, according to Malcolm.
Even if we were able to make a backup according to other acts. This issue would also prevent anything but original DVD's from being played in dvd players. Unlike vague laws now, this one would restrict you from using a backup, not just copying disks.
In my opinion, it won't happen, but the US is so screwed up on the judicial level that you never know.
