I was able to isolate the memory address that stored the money amount and change it to 999,999,999 cr. The only downside is that it is saved after the intro videos.

I only tested it on version 1.3.

save game 'normal' keeps crashing on me. any other money editing tools out there?

Check the offical forums for X3, there you will find how to change your money in game.

Doesnt help since no matter what ship you have, the game gets harder due to your equipment.
