ps2 on psx?

I just got into video games for my son, he's 4 years old, and I wanted to know if you could play ps2 games on a psx?

PS2 is backwards compatible with PSX.
I.E. PS2 will play PSX games as well as PS2 ones.
Playstation (PSX) is NOT forward compatible with the PS2, I.E. it will only play PSX games.
