sounds like a dirty laser. how old is your ps2? you may want to try to use a disc cleaner and if that doesn't work u may try to adjust the laser!

I cleaned the laser.

Still same thing.

I already adjusted the dvd pot from 1200 to 1050

Is it worth going lower?

Anyone know?

When i finished the mod last night everything was working. Today i was going to check my games and make sure everything still worked and now this problem.

If I remember right you made those adjustments to the laser when the chip wasn’t working yet. It may not have needed to be adjusted at all. Maybe put it back to what it was at and if you moved the white cog put that back also and see how that works.

Yup, the white cog can make a big difference booting cheap DVD-R’s and on you last post it didn’t sound like you were using any decent media. Going back to original setting and starting from there is a good idea.
For christ sakes get some good media. Maxell DVD-R’s had a booting range of less than ¼ turn on my V4’s white cog. Princo’s had a little over ¼ range. Originl DVD’s and Verbatims worked with over ½ turn range! You want the white cog right in the center of the working range and it’s best to adjust while reading a DVD’s data as close to the outer edge of the disk as possible.

how do you adjust it while its reading the outside?

Its back at its original position because it didnt do anything the last time i moved it. but i never moved it while it was reading or anything.

What do you look for while your turning it and watching it. Does it freeze up if you go to far or something?

First off you can’t adjust it while it's reading unless you’re Sony. You have to make fine small adjustments then put it back together and see if your adjustments worked. When I'm adjusting lasers I just leave the top of the PS2's case off and the top of the drive unscrewed and when I go to test out my adjustments I place something with some weight to it (like a paper weight or an empty coffee cup….empty being the key word) on top of the drive to simulate it being screwed down. As for what ihaveanosebleed is sawing about being in the middle of its range, you want to go one click at a time until it wont read your disc any more in one direction (mark the cog at the point it stops reading with a pen), then turn around and go the other direction until it stops reading that way also. When you have found its most outer edges of its reading range split the difference and that’s the center. Also you want to have a disc that it full to the brim with data so the beginning of the track is at the outer edge of the disc. You want to do this because that is where the laser will have the hardest time reading data. This is a very time consuming process and there is no magic answer to how it’s done, we aren’t Sony repair men and don’t have their tools so this is how we have to do it. Just take your time.

Oh also is this in a V4??? I thought it was in a V7.... If it’s in a V4 it could just be a fact that the laser is getting worn out. V4 and earlier PS2's have crappy lasers that will wear out more quickly then the V5 and later PS2's.

Good luck

I’ve explained a couple times before how I adjust the white gear while the PS2 is running. V7’s are a little harder to judge because only the left side of the cog is exposed.

I adjusted the cog while i had a disc running. Theres a little hole you can stick a small screwdriver down and turn it while the disk is spinning..

I got it to work much better. Tested a bunch of backups with no problems.

I put the cover on and it works sometimes.

Im guessing when i tighted down the screws it makes something touch inside. I have the chip in the right location.

Anyone else have a squishing problem?

I just installed a Magic V with "clip" kit in my v7, and there is definitely a squishing problem! I've read this thread and have similar problems to solve, but one I'm also going to tackle is cutting the chassis a little to accomodate the chip and wires. The squishing on top of the extra pc boards isn't helping I'm sure. I'll post again once I start tackling my problems. Thanks to all who have helped mollar with great diagnostics!

AAAAAAA!!!!! What, are you really going to cut up your PS2 just to accommodate a crappy clip kit? The kit is the problem consider removing it before hacking up your PS2 to accommodate a peace of junk that shouldn’t be in there.

I think I remember hearing that clip kits are prone to overheating, and melting. Anyone have any expieriance whith that?

I agree with spedmetal, the clip is the problem. I would take it out and install the chip the correct way before i would butcher up the console.

Yeah, looking at it again I think I will pull the clips out. I've got wire to it it all direct anyway, so I'll try that this weekend. I'll post back with the outcome...
