I've heard of it and I know what it does (allows you to go online with the box instead of using xbox live) but exactly how does it work and how do I install it on my xbox? I'm really curious.

xbconnect isn't installed on your xbox. U put it on your PC (kinda like gamespy). With the help of a router, xbconnect mimics the system link cable across the internet. So, you can only use it in games that support system link play, but it is still pretty cool (to play games like halo online). And, voice chat is supported for games that can use it.
There is another app called x-link, that is ran on your xbox. I have not tried it, but ther is a thread about it somewhere around here.

so pretty much any thing you can LAN together will play on it right? Cuz I was thinking about maybe getting it and playing a few xbox games against some people who can play.

FYI - As for the "exactly how it works" part it reframes your ethernet frames(tunneling) into a routable packet that can then be sent across the internet and disassembled on another computer and sent to someone elses Box. It's pretty cool stuff since the computers and network do all of the behind the scenes stuff while the Xbox doesnt even know it's not on a LAN with another Xbox.
I've seen advertisements for Gamespy Tunnel which is a similar application but I haven't used it. From what I've seen it is also free so you might want to give it a try.
i'm currentley running a programme called x-link rc2 omega. it's a very small programme about 4.5 mb in size. once installed on you'r pc it runs like a msn messanger portal. all oyu do is connect the xbox to the pc and select system link game dependong on you'r game. then you launch x-ling and sighn in.
once sighned in you go to a game room and whalla multi game over the internet.

Will the XBConnect software work with a modded (Xecutor2) console? Or will it "ban" you like XBL does?

Yes you can play all your stolen XBox games on XBC with out getting banned.
LOL J/K :D hehehe
Playing back ups is not a problem with XBC or any other tunneling software I know of.
