I am interested in buying a DVD writer. My research initially suggested that the Sony DRU500A was the best choice for my application. However, when I tried to purchase one, I found no stock at all vendors I contacted. During my search I discovered that a "new" model, the Sony DW-U10A, might be replacing the DRU500A. However, I can not find stock on this item either. More than one vendor suggested that there was manufacturing problems with the DRU500 and that units were recalled. Can you please tell me the "real" story about these drives? Thank you.

I have never heard of anybody on this forum having physical problems with their DRU-500A. As for a Sony DW-U10A there is nothing regaring this product on the US or UK Sony site. If you are in the UK good luck. There is a big shortage over there. A recall of the DRU-500A is very unlikely. You hear nothing but raving reviews on it and no problems that I am aware of.

Thank you. I also checked the Sony sites without seeing anything. I even called and they denied knowledge of the new drive. However, vendors such as Supermediastore.com are offering it for sale (no stock!). Many software sites are showing compatibility with the drive, so it appears to be "real". BTW, I am in Tucson, AZ. TX again.
