Ok, i've tried before, and failed. So i've decided to give this backing up PSX games a second whirl. Here's where i'm confused:
Is it possible to backup a PSX game, and play it on a PSX console that does not have a mod chip? I've read about "Boot methods" where you don't need a modchip, but i've tried some, and they didn't seem to work.
Can someone sort this out for me?

Thanks!

Ok heres the deal earlier psx's could boot a back up copy performing what is called the swap trick this is where you let an original game boot up the country code then remove it very quickly and replace it with the back up copy. This was all fine and dandy until sony realized the error in their ways and made it impossible to do this in later models such as mine and I assume yours. Swapping also drastically shortens the life of your psx. So now your are left with two options a boot cd or an internal modchip.

A modchip is cheaper but requires some technical know how when it comes to soldering. But on the upside it plays all games and saves the life of your ps ie no swapping

A boot disc is kinda pricey 20-25 dollars. The advantage to it is that it requires no technical know how. But like I said can seriously damage your psx because you have to keep swapping out the boot disc and putting in the copy

Hope this helps

Now... this raises another question...
I really don't want to have to go through putting in a mod chip on my PSX, because i do have a PS2 (which i plan on modding). I wanted to try and test backing up games on my PSX to make sure i got things done correctly. So i'd like to try a boot disc.
Now... do i have to purchase a boot disc? or can i download an image of one and put it on a cd?

Note to everyone: Please don't yell at me for not using the "search" option. It doesn't work for me. It keeps telling me "You have not entered the minimum number of search terms" or something like that, no matter how many words i put in.

Thanks for the info!

EDIT: I do have an older PSX (i think), not a PSOne, how can i tell if i can do the original swap thing (can you tell by a model number)?

Ok yeah you do have to buy a boot disc because a playstation cannot read a normal burnt cd. Explanation:

Ok a playstaion looks for certain bad sectors (copy protection) on a psx cd or in this case a boot cd a boot cd gives its own set of bad data and a country code for your psx to read then it says please insert you games cd etc. so now your psx has already checked for bad sectors and a country code and loads up the cd. A normal cd burner cannot write those bad sectors. So in closing you must by a boot cd.

Now if your psx was modded you could use a boot cd but if you haven't guessed it that kinda defeats the purpose. It seems like kind of a waste to blow 25 bucks just to see if your doing it right. You could try it out on a playstaion emulator like epsxe. That would save you on the whole cd ordeal plus you would have to order it from some website if you need help with the emulator thing just ask

oh yeah and the label on the bottom tells its release code

scph 1000
scph 3000
scph 5000
scph 7000
scph 9000

thats just the base the real numbers will be like scph 7052
I belive the only ones the swao trick will work on is the scph 1000
