View Full Version : Is my ps2 dying or is it already dead?
This is bad, very bad, I have had my ps2 since about mid-feb and chipped since march wit a no-solder (CRAP) then a neo 2.2 for a couple of weeks, moved onto a neo4r and was happy enough until I played medal of honor:frontline dvd-rip. It started messing me around while I was playing it, not reading the cd and stuff like that. Now it just stays at the browser/sys.cfg. screen and you can hear the drive making all sorts of noises. I'm lucky if it will boot an original I tried metal gear got to the end of the begining cut scene and it failed to read the cd. On the bright side though it can play the first track of a cdr audio cd, the rest of tracks it is unable to read. Could it b that the arm of the laser is stuck or sticking?
Or is my PS2 pissed at me or is it dying? And wot will I have to do to correct the problem? Ne help gladly appreciated.
P.S: A mate rented medal of honor and played it the next morning his v1 machine is completely dead, it won't even turn on.

You don't have too many options here - a pity you're over the Irish sea unless you want to send the PS2 over to my famous 'mate round the corner' to get it fixed.
There has to be a reason why it's shagged - we'll get to the bootom of that. My posts on laser adjustment are the result of his work.
If the laser is shot, that might be a problem. We could try whacking a v4 laser in.
I recommend dumping the NEO4. God knows what 44 wires are doing. If just one of them is misplaced (like if you're not bothered with macrovision and you;re moving a few volts somewhere else - a bad example I know -) then someting can get fried.
It needs professional attention anyway, it seems to me.
Cheers for the advice, wot u said about the macrovision might b right, cos the macrovision was still on it, I didn't install it myself it was one of my dads mates, proper electrician guy one of those people that can fix nearly ne thing wit a circuit board, I am throwing it up to him 2morro to take a look at it and hopefully it will b fixable. The only reason I got all these damned chips in it is cos my dad does them and the games, purely regretting it now.
2 questions if it is the laser will a version 4 really work and will it b just a replacment small lens? (off lik-sang)

I picked macrovision at random. Don't think that's the problem (even if it might be - I don't know!).
A replacement laser is the whole assembly, complete with lens, diodes (laser and photo), pots and sled for riding on the rails.
I'll ask my famous mate if the two are interchangeable. There's been some stuff on the forums about that too.
