backup questions

I just bought some previously used psx games from Blockbuster video, and i am having problems backing them up. I have heard somewhere that the rented game versions are different. Is that true? Are the patches listed on megagames.com supposed to work with these versions? I have been unsuccesful in backing up these games. Any suggestions?
