just read an old post from june that says DCs dated after October 2000 cannot play backups.
anyone know if this is true as i am having trouble with the disc not always being recognised or sometimes when it is recognised it will reset. this is with a cold DC. was thinking of replacing the machine but am now having second thoughts.

I've had that problem also. Read these threads and you should be on your way to playing backups in your new dc.

thanks for the info, but don't really fancy trying to reburn all my backups.
i'll either have to find a second machine or try to get mine fixed if the problem continues

Fix?

Send it back to Sega, and tell them it doesn't play your backups... They would just love that.

Just because you got one last week, it doesn't mean it's a NEW DREAMCAST (Anti-copy version).

You keep posting, implying that since you just got one and it works, everyone else with NEW machines must be doing something wrong... Check the label on the bottom of your machine. If the date is before OCTOBER 2000, that is the reason you can play everything without having to rebuild each game disc manually.

There *IS* a problem with machines produced "OCTOBER 2000" and later, where the current game backups won't work on them. The data files have to be extracted and the disc has to be rebuilt in a different format for them to work.
