View Full Version : Sonic Adventure 2 Causes Permanent Damage?

Just speculating here, but I've noticed at least one other person report the exact same problem:
Burn SA2, play it, and suddenly you ####t experiencing "lock-ups" with everything you put in there.
First thing that popped into my mind when that happened was that it was overheating, which someone else also said they believed that too, since the DC is getting old and I have pulled a few "all-nighters" playing Shenmue and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced any problems after playing SA2?

I was probably that "other person".
My SA2 was the Echelon release and it was patched with the additional patch (that they didn't add to the initial release).

I have two copies, since the patch was packaged with it when I first got it, it was Echelon SA2 unpatched. I noticed the lockup effects immediately. Got to the points in both Hero and Dark stories that it would just not go on without a patch, so I patched it and mostly finished the game.
It locks up after the Dark credits everytime.

huh thats strange it work perfect for me, all till the part that i havent beet, im on the very last thing where your w/ both good and evil, w/o any graphical problems..maybe its how you all patched it
I just came up with a SWAG (Silly Wild-Assed Guess):
I've burned all of my games at the fastest possible speed (whatever the disc was rated at, either 8x or 6x). Immediately after burning the disc, it works just fine in my DC, but it seems that they ####t locking up after a while... (the SA2 lockup syndrome mentioned above where everything seems to be locking up now).
I wonder if my lockups may be due to the discs being burned too fast - and they work when they're fresh, but the dye fades a little after they cool down from the initial burn.
It's a theory! Anyone think it's worth a shot?

Maybe, but my Utopia Boot Disc, burned just a little while after Utopia released the v1.1 image, still works fine. Crazy Taxi 2 and SA2 were burned back to back, both in an unregged DiscJuggler (1X burn... ick). Crazy Taxi 2 was the first one burned, worked just fine. I burned SA2 while I played CT2. Right after SA2 came out of the burner and went into my DC, once I got frustrated enough to switch to another game, that's when I noticed the problems.
Some guy in another thread mentioned about bad electrical connections and that they cause overheating and reboots. I've never experienced random reboots, but makes me wonder if I will here in the near future.
Still the problems occuring right after SA2 was played is still too suspicious to me.

Huh? I just downloaded the game. I already played it once. No lock up. Do u guys suggest I not play that game anymore? Also, does it only cause lock ups while playing Sonic 2, or will it lock up every other game that i put in?
I'm not suggesting that SA2 causes permanent problems with lockups, but it is suspicious that my machine ####ted locking up on about 50-60% of my games only after experiencing lockups on SA2. It could've been that my DC is just ####ting to overheat and it ####ted showing signs while playing SA2 for the first time. It could also be, as I mentioned before, the dye "settling in" to a less readable state after the disc cools from the initial burn (this is just a wild theory). It seems that even after the DC ####ted locking up on many of my games, new games work just fine - for the first one or two times I use them, then they too ####t locking up. I always test a game immediately after burning it and they all booted and worked fine. Going back to one that's a day or two old, however, and they don't work properly anymore. I'm using CompUSA 80min 16x discs, burned at 8x, and the speed I'm using might be partly to blame.
If SA2 works for you, and none of your other games are showing signs of trouble, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you ####t noticing random lockups and they get progressively more frequent, suspect heat problems first (try pointing a fan on the back of the machine)... Other than that, I can't suggest anything else, except maybe burn at a lower speed if problems occur.
